Protesters throw rocks, eggs at U.S. Embassy JAKARTA (AP): About 400 Muslim protesters on Sunday attacked the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta with rocks, tomatoes and eggs. In speeches, members of the Islamic Defenders Front said that U.S. President George W. Bush had supported the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in European newspapers. "They (Western countries) want to destroy Islam through the issue of terrorism ... and all those things are engineered by the United States," said Maksuni, a protest organizer. Protesters tried to storm the embassy's fortified gates at about 12:15 p.m local time (0515 GMT), shouting anti-American slogans and brandishing wooden staves and bamboo poles. They then set fire to U.S. flags and a poster of President Bush, and smashed the windows of a guard outpost before dispersing after a few minutes. No injuries were reported. U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia B. Lynn Pascoe condemned the violence. "This was a premeditated event that was staged for television by a small group which seeks to disrupt the relationship between the United States and Indonesia," he said. Protests over the cartoons have mostly been peaceful and small by the standards of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation. It was the second attack by the group on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Indonesia over the cartoons. On Feb. 6, police fired warning shots to stop protesters from ripping a plaque from the wall of the U.S. consulate in Surabaya, the country's second largest city. Earlier in that day protesters threw rocks at the Danish consulate in Jakarta.
