Cartoon protests continue in Jakarta JAKARTA (Antara): Protests against the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad by a Danish newspaper and several other newspapers in European countries continued in Jakarta on Thursday. Some 2,000 people demonstrated in front of the Danish Embassy in South Jakarta, causing traffic congestion around the Mega Kuningan diplomatic compound. Arriving from throughout Greater Jakarta, the protesters, who identified themselves as the Banten Great Family Forum, arrived in the capital aboard some 500 buses and private vehicles. About 400 police officers were at hand during the peaceful rally. On Sunday, hundreds of Muslims hurled stones at the U.S. Embassy in Central Jakarta. The embassy condemned the violence, saying it was a"premeditated event" staged for television by a small group that "seeks to disrupt the relationship between the United States and Indonesia". Police arrested dozens of the protesters. Like elsewhere in the Islamic world, the cartoons of the Prophet have generated anger and protests across Indonesia. But compared to those in Pakistan and countries in the Middle East, the demonstrations have been largely peaceful here. Denmark's Ambassador to Indonesia Niels Erik Andersen on Tuesday returned to Jakarta after leaving the country following an attack by some 150 protesters on the high-rise building housing the Danish Embassy. The embassy has been temporarily closed since Feb. 11. Most Muslims in Indonesia practice a moderate form of the faith, but fundamentalist thought is gaining a foothold in the country of 220 million, which has been hit by five terrorist attacks since 2000.
