Indonesia's Harbor Costs Most Expensive in the World
Tuesday, 28 March, 2006 | 09:06 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The government has acknowledged that operational
costs in Indonesian harbors are the most expensive in the world because of many
illegal charges.

"The illegal charges levied are what make the costs so expensive," said
Transportation Minister Hatta Radjasa in Jakarta yesterday (27/3).

Radjasa explained that harbor loading and unloading fees for 20-foot containers
had already been reduced from US$150 to US$95 in November 2005.

However, illegal charges are levied most frequently during loading and
unloading, so total costs are high.

As a consequence, said Radjasa, the cost of domestic products for export rises,
resulting in higher prices compared to other products in the international
marketplace.

For imported products, foreign businesspersons bear the expensive costs because
of people's low purchasing power in Indonesia.
