Cuban doctors prevent a second wave of deaths in Pakistan . Affirms Health Minister Nazim Khan, adding that his government would like to broaden collaboration with the island . Almost 2 million patients attended by Cuban physicians NAZIM Khan, health minister of Pakistan, affirmed that President Pervez Musharraf and his government would like to broaden and strengthen bilateral cooperation with Cuba in areas such as the pharmaceutical industry and professional exchange. In a meeting with directors of the Cuban state mission in Pakistan, Nazim Khan recalled how after the earthquake, which left more than 75,000 people dead, a second wave of deaths caused by epidemics and the arrival of winter had been feared but was prevented - he pointed out - by international help, especially that provided by the Cuban medical brigade. For her part, Zobaida Jalal, minister of social security and special education, called for the development of cooperation in strengthening the basic infrastructure of the medical field and in training paramedic personnel, which is an urgent need in Pakistan. THANKFUL FOR CUBA'S GESTURE OF DONATING REHABILITATION EQUIPMENT The minister thanked the Cuban government's gesture of donating all the rehabilitation equipment used by the physical therapists during their stay in that southeast Asian nation and assured that it will be used in the continuing treatment of the thousands of individuals left disabled by the earthquake in October 2005. During the meeting, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, first deputy minister of foreign affairs, described the work done by the Cuban physicians in Pakistan as a heroic humanitarian deed. Rodríguez Parrilla bid farewell to a group of Cuban medical personnel who returned to Havana after completing missions in the three hospitals set up by Cuba in Muzaffarabad, Mansehra and Abbottabad. Upon the arrival of that group on May 18, which was received by Rolando Gómez, director of cooperation for MINREX, the Cuban Medical Brigade concluded its aid work in Pakistan with more than 1.7 million patients attended, 49.1% of which were women. In his farewell address, Rodríguez Parrilla praised the work of the Mission's Logistics Group, "the bravest and most selfless," and of the Cuban medical personnel charged with training that benefited more than 700 Pakistani medical students. Likewise, he commended the work of 670 Pakistani specialists already underway at the same sites where the Cuban mobile hospitals were located.
