*National News - June 14, 2006* *Nani Afrida*, The Jakarta Post, Banda Aceh Residents of Lampuyang, Pulau Aceh, held a protest rally Tuesday in front of the Catholic Relief Service (CRS) office in Banda Aceh, demanding it finish reconstruction work on their village, which has been delayed for over a year. The protesters, who traveled by boat from Pulau Aceh to Banda Aceh, said they were tired of waiting for the CRS to keep its promise. Other non-governmental organizations working on Pulau Aceh had already completed construction of houses for the displaced, they said. The CRS initially committed to building 30 houses in Lampuyang, but only 20 percent have been completed. Most of the rest are still at the foundation stage and are overgrown with weeds. The iron rod structures have started to corrode due to constant exposure to salty air. "If the CRS cannot complete the task, let the other NGOs take over. Don't keep on delaying it," said Latif, 22. Another resident, Muhammad Ali, 70, said the CRS had also promised to build a pier and a clean water plant on the island. "The pier that we built is better than the expensive one the CRS built." Many Pulau Aceh residents, particularly women and children, are still living in shelters for displaced persons in Banda Aceh, as the suspended reconstruction process has left them with nowhere to live. Most of the men have returned to Pulau Aceh to work as farmers or grow crops on the hillside. "We could live with our wives and children again, if the houses were completed," said Nasir, 42. The protesters were directly addressed by CRS Aceh director Scott Campbell. According to Campbell, his organization will fulfill all the promises it made. "We will carry on building the houses, pier and clean water facility for Pulau Aceh residents," said Campbell. However, he said the CRS could not monitor the entire reconstruction process especially tasks carried out by third parties. The CRS would assign another contractor to complete the work, he said.
