THE elixir of life might not be a myth after all.
American and British scientists believe they may be a step closer to
developing a wonder drug that promotes youth, slimness and sexual
allure at the same time as protecting against heart disease and
cancer. The researchers, realising there is a fortune to be made from
a pill that counters the excesses of the 21st century lifestyle, are
investigating a substance called resveratrol. They believe it could be
the holy grail of the pharmaceutical industry: a single drug to
decrease weight and increase longevity and well-being.
Resveratrol was discovered in grape skins and red wine, when
scientists were trying to unravel how it is that the French can
consume copious quantities of alcohol, meat and cheese without
succumbing to high rates of disease. Tests show resveratrol can help
body cells repair themselves, and it speeds up fat-burning within the
cells. It also appears to cure asthma.
The drug works by binding to a class of proteins called sirtuins,
which regulate the repair of cells and boosts their efficiency. The
drug is being tested as a treatment for colon cancer and lung disease
in England, for prostate cancer in California and as a herpes cure in
Canada.
"It is no coincidence that it seems to have a beneficial effect in
every disease it has been tried on," said leading molecular geneticist
David Sinclair, of Harvard Medical School, the leader of a team
investigating resveratrol's anti-ageing effects.
Now the race is on to create and test synthetic forms of the
substance.
