Innocent until proven Muslim

By Gul Jammas Hussain

"We are just about to be destroyed by evil monsters, when at the last minute
we are miraculously saved by a superhero or super weaponry," says the
literary critic Bruce Franklin.

On August 10, Britain was miraculously saved from evil forces at the
eleventh hour by its superheroes. The island nation narrowly escaped the
apocalyptic scenes of massive killings similar to 9/11. At London’s Heathrow
airport, the British police and intelligence agencies, with the full
cooperation of the CIA and Pakistan's ISI (Inter Services Intelligence),
foiled a terrorist plot to blow up 10 U.S.-bound airplanes in midair.

Scotland Yard Deputy Commissioner Paul Stephenson claimed that it "was
intended to be a mass murder on an unimaginable scale." The same Scotland
Yard had earned a great 'reputation' for 'excellence' and 'professional
skills'. Last year, on July 22, they murdered an innocent young Brazilian in
cold blood on the tube taking him for a potential terrorist. Later on, the
pumped-up, strutting cops broke into the home of another innocent British
citizen of Pakistani origin… and shot him in the shoulder.

So far, not a scrap of valid evidence has been provided for this prospective
'mass murder' terrorist plot, neither by the British police, nor by the
British or U.S. intelligence agencies. The lies told when the alleged plot
was first announced have been exposed one by one. Now, in utter confusion
and frustration, the British agencies are distancing themselves from U.S.
agencies, which are desperately trying to link it with the old phantom enemy
-- Al-Qaeda.

A respected Urdu journalist, covering war for his TV channel, has revealed
that while the war in Lebanon was still raging, Western journalists received
orders from their organizations to go to Pakistan and Afghanistan and
discover Al-Qaeda links to the terrorist plot. Despite the fact that the job
was assigned to the best spin doctors available, no Al-Qaeda link could be
established. Bush is getting mad at his pillion rider, Tony Blair. Blair is
flustered and looks like 'an abused wife', as Matt Frei would say.

With the recent Labour revolt in the British Parliament, Blair’s reputation
at home and abroad has plummeted to new lows. The warmongering and avarice
of Blair and Bush have proven the 'war on terror' to be a gimmick. They are
in dire need of new pretexts and new war jargon to satisfy people at home
and abroad. There is a strong possibility that Britain's own agencies have
concocted a terrorist plot in order to kill several birds with one stone.

Although over six decades have elapsed, Hermann Goering's words still ring
true: "… All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and
denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to
danger. It works the same in every country."

Just a week before the alleged 'terrorist plot explosion', over 100,000
people in London protested against the Blair government’s decision to
conspire with the Zionist regime in Tel Aviv in its deliberate, pre-planned,
barbaric, inhuman, and criminal invasion of Lebanon. Since the exposure of
the "terrorist plot”, the Muslim diaspora has been harassed so much that not
a single gathering has been seen in the following weekends.

Every British Muslim is deemed 'innocent until proven Muslim'. Two dozen
young British Muslims were arrested and over 1.5 million have been harassed.
British security forces have arrested taxi-drivers, daily-wage-earners,
pizza-sellers, slum-dwellers, vendors, football and cricket lovers,
mosque-goers, and soft-spoken, well-mannered students, some married with
children and pregnant wives. In their suburban localities, they are
respected for their sound character and good bearing.

The neighbors described them as ordinary, harmless, peaceful, and loving
people. The father of Nabeel, Tanvir, and Umair, arrested in an east London
suburb, said that his sons' only crime was "going to mosque and offering
prayer". Three new converts to Islam, called the Ali Brothers by British
agencies, lived on Micklefield Road, London. They had built a small prayer
room in the back of their garden to offer obligatory prayers. They gave up
their old bad habits of drinking, taking drugs, going to mixed dance clubs,
and participating in cocktail parties, and were trying hard to become good,
faithful Muslims. Their joy of recantation was cut short when they were
arrested for interrogation and investigation of the crimes the security
forces think they were going to commit.

The vile daily rags like the Daily Mail and The Sun are falling all over
themselves in their haste to declare Muslim imams preachers of hate and
mosques dens of terrorists. The mainstream media are also super-busy
speculating about the dangers of "home-grown" terrorism and spewing hate
against Muslims and their faith.

However, the torchbearer of this hate campaign against Muslims is the chief
warmonger, George W. Bush, who said something so drastic that no one had
ever before dared to say in America's entire history. As he got the whiff,
he declared with appalling suddenness, "This nation is at war with Islamic
fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to
hurt our nation.” He is trying to create a new lethal lexicon for his old
'war on terrorism'. He callously and foolishly associated the tyranny and
ugliness of fascism with the peace and purity of Islam.

In November 2002, the Blair establishment was jittery at the threat of a
"dirty bomb" explosion in Britain. Almost four years have elapsed, and no
dirty bomb has exploded in the British Isles. Let us keep our fingers
crossed till we hear about the next "dirty bomb" or "terrorist plot".
