An Indonesian politician has laughed off an Australian warrant for his arrest,
issued after he failed to give evidence at an inquest into the death of one of
the Balibo Five journalists.
A warrant was issued in Sydney today for the arrest of Yunus Yosfiah. The
inquest has been told he ordered the killings of Brian Peters and four other
Australian newsmen at Balibo in East Timor in 1975.

While the warrant has no legal weight outside Australia, the coroner hearing
the inquest said it demonstrated how crucial Yosfiah's testimony was.

Yosfiah, currently a member of the Islamic United Development Party (PPP) in
Indonesia's parliament, laughed off the move today.

"Let it be. How can they do that?" he said.

Asked if he was concerned about the warrant, he said: "No, why must I worry? I
don't feel guilty.

"Don't try to make me think that I'm guilty. I don't feel guilty."

Yosfiah has denied involvement in the deaths.

New South Wales Deputy State Coroner Dorelle Pinch stressed that issuing the
warrant did not mean Yosfiah had done anything wrong.

Yosfiah had failed to respond to four letters asking him to appear at hearing,
the Glebe Coroner's Court in Sydney was told.

Yesterday, after Pinch appealed for him to attend the inquest, he said: "Why
must I go there? Why must I come to every summons from the outside?

"I have cleared this matter in front of the Indonesian parliament.

"It's an old problem and it's not anything new ... the information from those
eyewitnesses is bullshit."

In 2001, Yosfiah denied the allegations and said he had never met the
journalists, when questioned by an Indonesian parliamentary commission.

At the time he reportedly said he had been stationed in Balibo in 1975 as a
captain, and wanted to visit Australia to "explain the whole thing".
