Women: 66.1% of country's technical and professional force

THIS March 8, International Women's Day, Cuba can show the world achievements
like women's wide participation in all the spheres of political, economic,
cultural and social life, Yolanda Ferrer Gómez, general secretary of the
Federation of Cuban Women, informed Granma daily.

To cite just some examples, those achievements can be appreciated in that women
are 46% of the work force in the public sector: 66.1% in the occupational
category of technicians and professionals, 48.9% of researchers, 63.3% of
university graduates, 56% of doctors and 52.3% of health personnel on
internationalist missions; 71% of legal professionals; and 36% of deputies in
the National Assembly.

Gender equality has been a prioritized objective since 1959 and to that end
policies and programs aimed at women's advance have been a constant to enable
them to fully exercise their rights in the socialist society that we are
building.

"We are aware that we have important challenges ahead and that the achievements
are starting points for advancing toward new goals. It is about fighting to
eradicate all vestiges of discrimination, a battle that, as our president said,
must be waged by society in general, headed by our (Communist) Party and in
which the Federation of Cuban Women is a decisive factor.

"Intelligence, pro-active energy and the revolutionary spirit of Cuban women
have been put to the test throughout these 48 years in which we have stood up
to the economic blockade, aggressions of all kind from the U.S. government, a
fight in which we have emerged victorious and will continue winning alongside
the rest of the people," she emphasized.
