==================== The Jakarta Post Bullying sholud be abolished Referring to the violent incidents at the Institute of Public Administration (IPDN) and more lately at Pangudi Luhur Senior High School (SMA), I would like to beg and plead the management of schools in Indonesia to adopt a zero tolerance policy towards any type of bullying. I also want to see an established counseling team to work with the bullies (including alumni), as they more than likely were themselves victims of bullying. With these actions put in place, the chain of abusive can be stopped right here and nowfor good. Whistleblowers, like Adi Suputra of SMA Pangudi Luhur, are agents of change in our society. Whistleblowers should be encouraged and rewarded by school management so others who experience bullying can find the courage to speak out. Bullying activities are mostly hiddenbut often openly accepted during formal school-sponsored activities, such as freshman orientation programs (ospek). I experienced this myself when I was a student at SMA Pangudi Luhur (in a form of student camping) and in School of Social and Political Science (FISIP, University of Indonesia) in a form of sarasehan (get togethers) in early and mid 1980s consecutively. I don't believe the school would have given formal consent for these incidents - nor would they have condoned them. But both situations createdareas" - and a situation that was easy to take advantage of. Around year 2000-2001, I was invited to a student initiation program in Puncak area by the Himpunan Mahasiswa Jurusan Ilmu Administrasi (Association of Students of Administration Science, FISIP UI). I specifically asked them to ensure no bullying would occur during the initiation - so I could give a speech and provide some sponsorship to the program. But the organizer could not guarantee this for me. In fact, the organizing committee argued it was part of the school's tradition to allow bullying activities. They also said it was difficult to control the behavior of senior students or alumni attending the initiation. So I did not attend the event and I did not donate any money. I appreciate the management team at SMA Pangudi Luhur and University of Indonesia has already initiated changes to eliminate bullying activities. But stricter measures and policies must be employedbecause bullying still occurs. Internationally oriented schools are now flourishing in Indonesia (i.e. Sekolah Pelita Harapan, International School of Bogor, Australian International School) and they seem to have good anti-bullying programs in place - programs that could be used as models. Let us learn. BAHAL TOBING Jakarta ================== ____________________________________________________________________________________ Now that's room service!
