China entrepreneurs back ties with Japan
KOBE (Kyodo) Chinese entrepreneurs from around the world began a
three-day meeting in Kobe on Saturday, with China's fourth-ranked leader Jia
Qinglin pledging to promote ties with Japan to continue the warming of ties
that began during outgoing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's tenure.
In an interesting move, former Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda, the
leading candidate to succeed Abe, made a surprise video appearance at the Ninth
World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention, also promising to promote regional
development in Asia.
Some 3,600 participants, including 2,600 ethnic Chinese, from 33
countries gathered for the biennial convention, which Japan hosted for the
first time.
In a speech at the opening ceremony held in the port city, Jia, who is in
Japan for a weeklong visit that began Wednesday, said friendly relations
between China and Japan will contribute to peace and stability in Asia and the
rest of the world.
"I would like to develop long-term relations between both countries in a
sound and stable manner," he said.
Jia is a standing committee member of the Chinese Communist Party's
Political Bureau and also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese
People's Political Consultative Conference.
The presence of the high-ranking Chinese official was overshadowed by the
absence of Abe, who was hospitalized Thursday for gastrointestinal problems
after abruptly announcing his resignation a day earlier.
It is the first time the host country's leader has skipped the convention
since it was initially proposed in 1991 by then Singaporean Prime Minister Lee
Kuan Yew.
In a brief video message to the convention, Fukuda, who filed his
candidacy Saturday morning for the Sept. 23 LDP presidential election, said, "I
will do my utmost for the future of Japan and Asia so I hope you will forgive
my absence."
Fukuda is known as a pro-China member in the Liberal Democratic Party and
had planned to attend the confab's opening ceremony in Kobe.
Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Tetsuzo Fuyushiba, who
attended the ceremony in Abe's stead, also called for a further deepening of
bilateral ties.
"Japan and China are now inseparable, and our mutually beneficial
relations will further deepen in the future in line with China's rapid
development," Fuyushiba said in his speech.
The bilateral relationship soured under Abe's predecessor, Junichiro
Koizumi, because of the annual visits he made to Tokyo's war-tinged Yasukuni
Shrine.
But relations have improved since Abe visited China last October
immediately after taking office. China responded with a long-awaited visit by
Premier Wen Jiabao to Japan in April.
Other prominent figures, such as Toyota Motor Corp. Chairman Fujio Cho,
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Corporate Counselor Yoichi Morishita, and
former Philippine President Fidel Ramos also attended the opening event.
The second day will be followed by a series of workshops on broad topics
including economics, urban development, media, and medicine at the
International Convention Center in Kobe.
Key figures including Liu Chuanzhi, chairman of Chinese computer maker
Lenovo Group Ltd., Nobel laureate physicist Chen Ning Yang, and leading
Japanese architect Tadao Ando will participate in the workshops.
