Friendship forged through blood and sacrifice," says Angolan President José Eduardo Dos Santos, arriving to strengthen bilateral relations By Maria Julia Mayoral and Arnaldo Musa-Granma daily- ANGOLAN President José Eduardo Dos Santos arrived in Havana on Thursday with the motive of fostering the friendship and fraternity between the two countries which, he affirmed, has been forged through blood and sacrifice during the most difficult moments of the struggle for independence and sovereignty. In a brief statement to the press, the country's leader and president of the MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) sent greetings to the Cuban people, recalling that many sacrificed their lives in Angola, and thanked Cuba for always standing beside the African nation. "During the last few years," he commented, "important changes have occurred in the world and Cuba as well as Angola are adapting to new conditions, hence the interest in investigating how we can cooperate to improve the lives of our respective peoples." The distinguished guest was received at José Martí Airport by José Ramón Machado Ventura, vice president of the Council of State and member of the Political Bureau. Also participating in the welcoming ceremony were other members of the Political Bureau, Army Corps General Leopoldo Cintra Frías, and Pedro Ross Leal, current ambassador to Angola. Also present were Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque and Brigade General Rafael Moracén Limonta, vice president of the Association of Combatants of the Cuban Revolution. A meeting of brothers The insoluble bond of blood uniting Cuba and Angola was emphasized last night during a meeting of the distinguished guest with a group of internationalist fighters. "In Angola we stood shoulder to shoulder in the war against colonialism," recalled the leader, pointing out that Cuban combatants contributed to winning the independence of Zimbabwe and Namibia, ending the hated apartheid regime in South Africa and helping his country establish peace. "Many of our comrades are not with us. They gave their lives so that our peoples could be free," he said as he thanked Fidel for responding, during one of the most difficult moments for humanity, in the midst of the Cold War, to the call from President Agostinho Neto to defend Angolan independence.
