Two foreign employees of the Red Cross have been abducted in southern
Afghanistan by the Taliban, a provincial police chief has said.

Ewaz Muslimyar told Reuters news agency that the two were kidnapped in
Wardak province as they travelled on the main highway between Kabul
and the southern city of Kandahar late on Wednesday.

He said: "Two Red Cross staff were kidnapped by the Taliban in the
Salar district yesterday.

"We asked them if they wanted a police escort, but they refused."

Four staff had travelled to Wardak but had not returned, a spokeswoman
for the Red Cross in Kabul said.

"The information I have is that four of our colleagues, two
expatriates and two Afghan nationals, were coming back from Wardak to
Kabul yesterday but they couldn't make it," said the spokeswoman, who
declined to be named.

"We have lost contact with our staff since yesterday," she said.

In August, the Red Cross helped broker talks between the Taliban and
officials from Seoul that led to the release of 19 South Korean
hostages after more than a month of captivity.
