Abdul Khalik, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta Indonesia says it fully supports the work of UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari in mediating the talks between Myanmar military junta and Aung San Suu Kyi, and has no plans to table the Myanmar issue at the UN Security Council during its presidency in November. "We have no program of discussing Myanmar during our presidency in November although the issue is still on the UN Security Council's agenda," Foreign Ministry director for international security and disarmament affairs Desra Percaya said during a press briefing Friday. In support of Gambari's mission, he said that Indonesia would not make moves to counter reconciliation efforts conducted by the UN envoy. Desra, however, said that the Myanmar problem still could be discussed if any member proposed it, and was supported by at least nine others. Gambari is visiting Asian countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, China and Japan, in an effort to seek support for his mission to bring together civilians and the military junta in Myanmar after he managed to meet both junta leader Gen. Than Shwe and democracy icon Suu Kyi earlier this month. After his departure, Than Shwe made a highly conditional offer of talks with Suu Kyi. During an interview with The Jakarta Post during his Jakarta visit, he expressed optimism that both Myanmar leaders could meet to start a dialog for reconciliation. Due to international pressure, Myanmar's junta has indicated that it will allow Gambari to return to the country early in November. Asked if the problems in Myanmar could delay the signing of the ASEAN Charter in Singapore later in November, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kristiarto Soeryo Legowo said that it depended on the grouping's leaders. "Although the high level task force drafting the charter has almost finished its job, we are still waiting for the charter's completion. The charter will be discussed by the foreign ministers and the leaders. We will see the development," he said. Many have expressed concerns as to whether the charter, a legally binding treaty that regulates relations among the 10 member countries, including Myanmar, can be signed after the recent troubles in the reclusive country. Desra said that Indonesia would propose strengthening the role of the regional organization in international peacekeeping efforts. "It can ease the UN's burden in maintaining international peace and security, and lessen the gap between international agreements and realities at the regional level. Indonesia will contribute with the Asian and the Pacific perspective, including lessons learned from ASEAN," he said. Desra dismissed suggestions that Indonesia's proposal aimed at strengthening ASEAN's role in Myanmar problems. "In fact, cooperation between ASEAN and the UN will help find a peaceful solution to Myanmar's problems," he said. http://www.thejakartapost.com/detailheadlines.asp?fileid=20071027.B08&irec=7 _________________________________________________________________ Help yourself to FREE treats served up daily at the Messenger Café.
