THE gunman believed to have killed four people at a Colorado megachurch and a missionary training school in the same state had been thrown out of the centre a few years ago and was sending it hate mail, police said.
Matthew Murray, 24, was home-schooled in what a friend said was a deeply religious Christian household. His father is a neurologist and a leading researcher specialising in multiple-sclerosis. Five people - including Murray - died on Sunday in the two eruptions of violence 12 hours and 65 miles apart. Five others were wounded. The first attack took place at Youth With a Mission, a training centre for missionaries in the Denver suburb of Arvada; the other occurred at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, where Murray was shot by a security guard, though investigators said he may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said they believed the two shootings had been carried out by the same person. The police spokesman added: "It appears that the suspect had been kicked out of the programme three years prior, and during the past few weeks had sent hate mail to the programme and its director."
