LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- A blast targeting former Pakistani Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao on Friday killed at least 35 people and wounded dozens more, local police told CNN. Sherpao survived, but the death toll was expected to rise. The incident occurred near his residence in Charsadda -- a village about 45 kilometers, or almost 28 miles, northeast of Peshawar. It was the second attempt on his life since April, when a suicide bomber blew himself up just a few feet away from Sherpao during a political rally there, injuring him and killing at least 28 people. Police told CNN they were not sure whether the blast was the result of a suicide attack or a bomb. But they believe Sherpao was the target because he supervised operations against militants in the tribal areas of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province. The Associated Press of Pakistan reported as many as 50 deaths and say the blast was caused by a suicide bomber inside a mosque, as people were gathering for religious observances of Eid al-Adha. The Muslim holy period coincides with the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. VideoWatch what's known about the blast » The APP quoted an official as saying the suicide bomber detonated in "the mid row of the Eid congregation." Body parts were strewn across the mosque, the APP said. Sherpao and his two sons were in the first row of the mosque, the APP reported. One -- Mustafa Khan Sherpao, had leg injuries, and the other -- Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao -- "escaped unhurt."
