Suicide blast hits Iraq worshippers
Shias across Iraq are marking the day Prophet

A suicide bomber wearing an explosives vest has killed
at least 10 people near a Shia mosque in the Iraqi
city of Baquba, police said.
Another 14 people were wounded in the attack on
Thursday as worshippers gathered in the city of Baquba
to observe Ashura, a day marked by both Sunni and Shia
Muslims.
Baquba is the capital of Diyala province, where the US
military and Iraqi forces are concentrating their
fight against al-Qaeda in Iraq and other armed groups
who were pushed out of Baghdad and the western Anbar
province.
Security operation
Iraqi security forces have meanwhile launched a major
operation to protect pilgrims attending the Ashura
commemorations in the holy Shia city of Karbala, south
of Baghdad.

Vehicle curfews have been imposed in southern
provinces as well as in Baghdad and Diyala to protect
Shias observing Ashura, who are commemorating the
death of Prophet Muhammad's grandson in a battle in
Karbala 1,300 years ago.
Suicide bombings and mortar attacks killed 171 people
during Ashura in Karbala and Baghdad in 2004.
