Iraq bomber strikes tribal meeting
At least 18 people, including tribal elders, are feared dead after a bomber
attacked a lunch gathering near the Iraqi capital.
Major-General Qassim Moussawi, a security spokesman, said 20 people were also
injured in the suicide attack on a Sunni Arab meeting near Baghdad.
The bombing took place at the home of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah Salih, the head
of the al-Garaqul tribe in Yusufiyah, 20km from the capital, on Friday.
Two other security sources gave higher tolls, with one police source saying 20
people were killed, while another security source said 30 died and more than
100 were wounded.
The sheikh was not among the casualties, officials said.
Also on Friday, armed men opened fire on a checkpoint manned by members of the
Sons of Iraq in Jurf al-Sakhar, killing two people, police said.
Four others were reported wounded in the attack 65km south of Baghdad.
