Top Indonesian Fashion Designer Arrested for Stealing Diamonds

One of Indonesian's top fashion designers will soon be fitted for an
unflattering new outfit: orange prison coveralls.

Adjie Notonegoro was arrested at 3 p.m. on Thursday for allegedly stealing
diamonds worth Rp 960 million ($106,560), Munif, head of the general crime
division at the South Jakarta Prosecutors' Office, said on Friday.

"Adjie was detained because he refused to cooperate during the investigation by
never responding to a police summons for questioning," he said.

"He was forcibly detained at the rented home of his maid in South Jakarta."

Adjie was reported to the South Jakarta Police in 2008 by his business partner
and friend, Melvin Chandrianto Thjin, who said he had entrusted Rp 3.1 billion
($345,000) worth of diamonds to Adjie to be sold.

Adjie allegedly sold Rp 960 million worth of the diamonds, but did not give
Melvin the money, spending it instead.

Munif said that Adjie had been charged on one count of embezzlement under the
Criminal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

He added that the prosecutors' office was currently building up their case
against Adjie in preparation for a trial, whose date has not yet been set.

Adjie, 49, rose to fame in the 1980s as one of Indonesia's few haute couture
fashion designers.

According to his official Web site, Adjie studied at both the Esmod Modelle
L'Ecole in Paris and the Mueller und Sohn Modeschule in Dusseldorf, Germany.

He went on to establish his own fashion brand, the House of Adjie, in 1986.
