Mosque remarks not an endorsement: Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama has clarified that he was not endorsing putting a
mosque near Ground Zero in a speech but supporting the facility's right to be
there.

U.S. President Barack Obama clarified on Saturday that he was not endorsing the
idea of putting a mosque near Ground Zero in a speech the previous night, but
rather supporting the right of the facility to be there.

"I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision
to put a mosque there," he said during his family trip to Florida. "I was
commenting very specifically on the right that people have that dates back to
our founding."

His intention "was simply to let people know what I thought," Obama said.
"Which was that in this country we treat everybody equally and in accordance
with the law, regardless of race, regardless of religion."

On Friday, speaking to a gathering at the White House to observe the Islamic
holy month of Ramadan, Obama said he believes "Muslims have the same right to
practise their religion as everyone else in this country."

"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community centre on
private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and
ordinances," he said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom
must be unshakable."

Many took his comments as meaning he supported the right and the idea of
building the Islamic centre at that site.

The mosque is to be part of a $100-million Islamic centre to be built in lower
Manhattan, two blocks from where nearly 3,000 people were killed when hijacked
jets slammed into the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

In his speech, Obama said the perpetrators of the attacks do not represent
Islam.

"Al-Qaeda's cause is not Islam - it's a gross distortion of Islam. These are
not religious leaders - they're terrorists who murder innocent men and women
and children. In fact, al Qaeda has killed more Muslims than people of any
other religion - and that list of victims includes innocent Muslims who were
killed on 9/11."

Plans to build the centre and mosque have sparked controversy across the
country.

White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton told Politico.com on Saturday
that Obama was "not backing off in any way from the comments he made last night.

"It is not his role as president to pass judgment on every local project. But
it is his responsibility to stand up for the constitutional principle of
religious freedom and equal treatment for all Americans," he added.
