Ex-guerilla leads race
Brasilia
September 20, 2010
A former Marxist guerilla once described by prosecutors as the ''Joan of Arc of
subversion'' is on course to become Brazil's first female president.

Dilma Rousseff, 62, who was locked up and tortured by the dictatorship that ran
Brazil in the 1970s, is President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's anointed
successor and is riding a wave of support that could see her win outright the
first round of voting on October 3.

Mr Lula, 64, has enjoyed poll ratings of more than 80 per cent in his eight
years of power. Since 2004, the number of Brazilians living in poverty fell
from almost half to less than a quarter.

If the election were held today, according to polls, Ms Rousseff would win 50
per cent of the vote, putting her far ahead of her main rival.
