US Muslim organisations held a summit yesterday to address the outcry over
the proposed Islamic centre near Ground Zero.
US Muslims are diverse, with African-Americans who found the faith during the
civil rights movement and recent immigrants coming from opposite ends of the
globe. However, the Park51 project - or the strident opposition to the plan -
appears to have had a unifying effect.
Spokesman Shaik Ubaid said the meeting was aimed at forging a united position
on the project. He said he had a growing sense of support for the plan.
"Once it became a rallying cry for extremists, we had no choice but to stand
with Feisal Rauf," he said, referring to the New York imam behind the centre.
