"I agree if the decree is further developed into law," Suryadharma told reporters at the House of Representatives in Jakarta on Tuesday. The decree, signed by the Religious Affairs Ministry and the Home Ministry, has recently been met with controversy with activists deeming it to have been used to justify religious organizations' oppression of other minority religions. The latest case revolves around the stabbing attack on members of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP) church in Ciketing, Bekasi. The HKBP members have insisted on conducting their Sunday mass on land despite vocal opposition from locals, who claim the church violats the joint decree by holding a mass without an official permission from the local government. However, numerous legal experts and legislators deem that a ministerial decree does not have a valid legal basis because it is not included as one of the country's legal hierarchy in the 2004 Law Regulation Law. Legislators from the Golkar Party and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) have also called for the revocation of the decree and the endorsement of a law on houses of worship.
