Books withdrawn after Islamic 'threats'

The largest chain of bookstores in Indonesia has withdrawn about twenty books
from sale because of what it says are threats by Muslim extremists.

They include all the works of the celebrated author Pramoedya Ananta Toer.

The company, Gramedia, said the decision was taken in response to a Tempo
magazine interview with members of the Islamic Youth Movement Gerakan Pemuda
Islam.

In it, they spoke of carrying out raids on shops which sell books associated
with communism -- an echo of the previous, long-standing ban on such books
first imposed by ex-President Suharto in the 1960s.
