PDI-P in Talks on Joining Indonesian Government Coalition Markus Junianto Sihaloho | October 16, 2010 The opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle is in talks with the ruling government coalition to cooperate, Puan Maharani, deputy chairwoman for political affairs and daughter of party chief Megawati Sukarnoputri, said on Friday. A young leader of the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle on Friday said that despite her party's stance it was still talking with the ruling coalition and had not dismissed the possibility of joining to gain a presence in the cabinet. Puan Maharani, deputy chairwoman for political affairs and daughter of party chief Megawati Sukarnoputri, said the party, also known as the PDI-P, was discussing co-operating with the government. "As to whether we will enter the cabinet or not, let us wait for a decision by the government," Puan said at party headquarters. Megawati, who has staunchly resisted any effort to cooperate with the government and insisted that the PDI-P remain in opposition, was in the room when Puan spoke but said nothing. Many, including officials from within the ruling Democratic Party, have called on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to review his ministers' performance and order a reshuffle if needed. Puan said the last meeting between a senior PDI-P official and Yudhoyono took place last month, when the president met her father, Taufik Kiemas. She said she also attended the meeting and that the two had discussed how the PDI-P could help respond to future political challenges and help jointly develop the country. Puan also derided the coalition parties, saying some were "acting more like the opposition itself" and that the president should consider reviewing the political compact. Puan's comments came after the announcement of the results of a new survey that showed the Golkar Party was shaping up to be an increasing threat to the Democrats in 2014, when the next elections are due. The survey, conducted by the Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI), showed that while support for the Democrats had risen 5 points to 26 percent, Golkar's support had risen to 17.3 percent, compared with 14.4 percent during last year's elections. The PDI-P was in third place with 13.6 percent, about a point less than last year. Golkar, the largest party in the coalition after the president's Democrats, has been a thorn in the Yudhoyono's side, with members often vocal in criticizing the government. Several previous government efforts to engage the PDI-P have met with dogged resistance from Megawati. A senior party legislator said this week that the chairwoman was "holding fast to the results of our last congress, that PDI-P is an opposition party." Burhanuddin Muhtadi, a political analyst from the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI), said Yudhoyono was at a crossroads and had to decide whether to retain the current coalition or forge a new one with the PDI-P. The party would be easier to control than Golkar, he said, as its members tended to follow what its leaders decided. He said the government was also in dire need of stability, a situation Yudhoyono had failed to achieve with his current coalition. "There are three coalition partners who always use maneuvers to push the government: Golkar, PKS [Prosperous Justice Party] and PPP [United Development Party], and the president doesn't like them," the analyst said. Sitting in the coalition would also help the PDI-P find sources of funding for the next election, Burhanuddin said. "But I am sure that as long as Megawati lives, such a coalition would never be established," he said.
