Singapore pressures Indonesia to tackle haze
Publish Date: Friday,22 October, 2010, at 12:05 PM Doha Time
Singapore yesterday stepped up its pressure on Indonesia after fires in Sumatra
continued to cloak parts of south-east Asia in a haze, causing air quality in
the city-state to hit unhealthy levels. "It is a matter of very serious
concern," Singapore's foreign ministry said in a statement. The ministry said
it had informed the Indonesian government that Singapore Foreign Minister
George Yeo would like to speak to his Indonesian counterpart today. Singapore's
Environmental Minister Yacoob Ibrahim "urged Indonesia to allocate the
necessary resources, and implement timely and effective measures to solve the
haze situation," the National Environment Agency said.
