Obama Returns to Childhood Home of Indonesia

A clutch of 9-year-olds from Barack Obama's childhood school have been
rehearsing a song for the president, although they're not sure whether he will
show up. "We haven't been told anything," said Hasimah, the disheartened
headmaster. "So we don't know how to prepare." This mix of hope and uncertainty
pervades Indonesia as the president begins his 24-hour stop in the country
today, part of a larger trip to several Asian nations, reports AP. The
president has planned to come to Indonesia twice before during his term but
canceled both trips because of the health care battle and the BP oil spill.
Indonesia ramped up preparations in anticipation of those two visits. But now,
in the aftermath of a deadly volcanic explosion and tsunami, the country is
struggling to muster the same excitement. Obama moved to Indonesia as a
7-year-old with his mother and her second husband, Indonesian Lolo Soetoro, and
lived in a Jakarta neighborhood for four years. But many Indonesians have lost
hope that Obama's brief trip, during which he will meet with Indonesia's
president, tour a mosque, and make a speech, will allow time for visits to old
haunts, or do much to ameliorate Muslim relations with the United States.
