Paralyzed after Working in Saudi Arabia

Workers mistreatment cases no dispute with S Arabia

Saturday, November 20, 2010 01:58 WIB | National | |

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said the
Indonesian migrant workers mistreatment cases in Saudi Arabia were not an issue
between the two countries.

"The Saudi Arabian government had also firmly condemned the perpetrators or the
employers," Marty Natalegawa said here Friday.

He said the Saudi Arabian government actually never responds to migrant workers
cases officially but because Indonesia had insisted on a settlement of the
cases, the Saudi Arabian government issued a statement condemning what had
happened to the two Indonesian workers, Sumiati and Kikim Komalasari.

Sumiati, a 23-year-old Indonesian migrant worker from West Nusa Tenggara was
tortured by her employer in Medina and had to be hospitalized for her injuries.

Her condition on Friday was reported to have improved after receiving intensive
medical treatment at a local hospital, while her uncle Zulkarnaen was scheduled
to visit her together with staffers from the Indonesian consulate general in
Jidda.

Kikim Komalasari was an Indonesian migrant worker from Cianjur, West Java, who
was killed by her employer on Sunday (Nov 14) and her body was found in a
public garbage dump in Abha city.

The Saudi police at first thought Kikim was a Bangladeshi woman but a task
force formed by the Indonesian consul general in Jidda later affirmed she was
Indonesian and passed on the information to the Foreign Ministry in Jakarta.

Both Kikim and Sumiati`s employers have now been detained by the local police
for further legal process, while Indonesia`s foeign ministry was assisting the
victims` families and relatives to identify them and take further actions.

"Both countries are now jointly handling the matter of legal charges against
the perpetrators and of how to prevent similar cases from happening again in
the future," said Marty.

"Surely, we must not only address such cases after they have happened but also
find ways of preventing them," he added.

About calls for repatriating all Indonesian migrant workers from Saudi Arabia,
Marty said bad things could happen to Indonesian workers in any foreign country
and when they occur the government must pay full attention, protect and take
the side of the victims.

"A moratorium on dispatch of workers to Saudi Arabia or any other measures must
be thoroughly weighed, because if a moratorium proves unenforcable, and
Indonesians keep going to Saudi Arabia to work, they would automatically be
categorized as illegals and this will cause problems for us all," said Marty.

Currently the Foreign Affairs Ministry is seeking to sign a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) on the employment of workers in the informal sector such as
housemaids because the Saudi Arabian government had no such agreement with any
other country.

"We hope that with such an MoU migrant workers abuse and maltreatment cases can
be prevented, but the main challenge will be how to monitor the housemaids or
workers condition," the minister said.(*)
