China ordains bishop despite Vatican objections
Publish Date: Sunday,21 November, 2010, at 12:04 PM Doha Time
China said yesterday it had ordained a bishop in a ceremony that had not been
approved by the pope, overriding objections by the Vatican. Liu Bainian, vice
president of the state-run Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, which
supervises the church in China, said that the ordination in Chengde had been
carried out as planned.
"This morning at 9 am we held (the ordination). Thanks to God," Liu said. On
Friday, Liu said the Vatican had been informed of plans to ordain Father Guo
Jincai two years ago but never replied. Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi
said Thursday that the Holy See was alarmed by reports alleging that bishops
loyal to the pope were being forced to attend the ordination.
