President of Timor-Leste in Cuba

PRESIDENT José Manuel Ramos-Horta of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and
Nobel Peace Prize laureate, arrived in Cuba yesterday, Thursday, in response to
an official invitation.

the support that Fidel, Raúl and the
Cuban government have given to me
in developing education and health
in my country," affirms the president

He was received at José Martí International Airport by Deputy Foreign Minister
Marcos Rodríguez and expressed his thanks to Fidel and Raúl and the Cuban
government and people for the cooperation programs underway in that South East
Asian nation, basically in the health and education sectors.
During his visit the president is to hold official talks with President Raúl
Castro and will meet with relatives of the five Cuban anti-terrorists
incarcerated in the United States, among other activities.
Today, Ramos-Horta is to place a wreath at the José Martí Monument in Plaza de
la Revolución and tour the Memorial dedicated to Cuba's national hero. The
president of Timor-Leste is accompanied by Zacarías Albano da Costa, minister
for foreign affairs; Egidio de Jesús, that country's ambassador to Cuba; and
other officials.
Cuba and Timor-Leste established diplomatic relations on May 20, 2002, the day
that that South East Asian country officially attained its independence.
Cuban specialists have contributed to a literacy program for 46,000 Timorese
using the "I Can Do It" method, and 600 young Timorese have or are studying at
the Latin America School of Medicine on the island. Concurrently, 219 Cuban
doctors are providing services in that sister nation.
