Russia: Julian Assange Should Get Nobel Prize Russia taunted the U.S. on Thursday by saying "public and non-governmental organizations should think of how to help" the beleaguered WikiLeaks founder. "Maybe, nominate him as a Nobel Prize laureate," said the source from President Dmitry Medvedev's office in Brussels, according to the Guardian. Meanwhile Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin showed his "alpha-dog" qualities on Thursday in response to questions about WikiLeak's release of secret U.S. diplomatic cables, reports Reuters. Putin was pointedly asked what he thought about American diplomats' characterization of him as an "alpha-dog," to which he snapped: "Do you think the American diplomatic service is a crystal clean source of information? Do you think so?" He went on to lambaste the West for the recent arrest of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. "If it is full democracy, then why have they hidden Mr. Assange in prison? That's what, democracy?" Putin took the opportunity at the press conference with French Prime Minister Francois Fillon to unleash an elaborate farrago of metaphors. "So, you know, as they say in the countryside, some people's cows can moo, but yours should keep quiet. So I would like to shoot the puck back at our American colleagues." Putin's antagonistic comments may have been a response to leaked cables that show U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in February of 2010, "Russian democracy has disappeared and the government is an oligarchy run by the security services."
