Israeli activist jailed for protest Published Date: December 28, 2010 JERUSALEM: An Israeli activist was yesterday sentenced to three months in jail for his part in a protest against Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip, his representatives said in a move slammed by rights groups. Jonathan Pollak, a prominent pro-Palestinian activist was arrested at a 2008 protest in Tel Aviv and convicted of "illegal assembly," said a statement from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, where Pollak works. Yesterday, a Tel Aviv judge imposed a three-month suspended sentence he had received for his role in a previous protest against Israel's West Bank barrier. At the trial, Pollak claimed he was unfairly targeted and the only one arrested at that protest. "The police not only singled out Pollak from a crowd of people who all did exactly as he did, but also singled out the entire protest for no reason other than its political alignment," the statement quoted his lawyer, Gaby Lasky, as saying. Similar events regularly take place in Tel Aviv without police intervention," he said. Israeli rights groups condemned the sentence. "The entire affair raises suspicion that Pollak was personally targeted because of his views, in an attempt to silence him and prevent him from partaking in various acts of protest," said Dan Yakir of the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. The sentencing came on the second anniversary of Israel's Cast Lead offensive in Gaza, launched in response to hundreds of rockets fired into the Jewish state. The war, which ended in a ceasefire on January 18, 2009, killed 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, and 13 Israelis, 10 of them soldiers.-AFP [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------------------ Post message: [email protected] Subscribe : [email protected] Unsubscribe : [email protected] List owner : [email protected] Homepage : http://proletar.8m.com/Yahoo!
