Then Macau, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Now police are looking into whether graft suspect Gayus Tambunan added a stopover in Guangzhou, China. A police source working on the investigation into the illicit travel of the infamous taxman, who was supposed to be behind bars in police detention all this time, said on Sunday that detectives were looking into the possibility that he went to Guangzhou for purposes other than leisure. "He did not only go to Macau, he continued his trip to Guangzhou to meet someone there. This is what we are investigating," the source said, adding that police did not believe Gayus's trip to Guangzhou had anything to do with securing his own fortunes, which include some Rp 100 billion ($11.1 million) in suspect assets discovered by police investigators. "We believe he met someone [in Guangzhou] in relation to a tax case he handled here." Gayus's wife, Milana Anggraeni, played a vital role on every trip, both domestic and overseas, the source said. "She has been very active and we suspect she could be involved in her husband's money-laundering activities," the source said, adding that police would decide whether to name Milani a suspect next week. National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam had earlier said Gayus, who used a false passport under the alias Sony Laksono, had been accompanied by his wife during his trips. The police source said Milana had tried to cover her steps, for example, by traveling from Melbourne to Kuala Lumpur to meet Gayus, instead of flying directly from Jakarta. The source added that it was highly unlikely Gayus had hidden his fortunes in the destinations he visited, saying that they would have no reason to return to Indonesia if they had money stashed abroad. Separately, Brig. Gen. Agung Sabar Santoso, National Police director for security and transnational crimes, confirmed that Milana had been questioned over the weekend about the trips. Detectives are scheduled to meet today with officials from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) to discuss possible evidence against Milana. Gayus has confessed to visiting Bali, Singapore, Macau and Kuala Lumpur in late September and early October last year, while supposedly locked up at the National Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) detention center in Depok awaiting trial. As for the false passport, a separate police source told the Globe that detectives were following a lead that Gayus obtained the passport and a fake ID from an immigration agent in Kramat, Central Jakarta. "We believe absolutely this agent has ties with an immigration officer," the source said. Gayus is being tried at the South Jakarta District Court for allegedly bribing state officials to secure an acquittal in an embezzlement trial last year. He has also been charged with paying off the warden and guards at the Brimob detention facility to allow him to leave his cell.
