Anti-slavery activists imprisoned in Mauritania
January 7, 2011

Three anti-slavery activists have been arrested and imprisoned in Mauritania.
Birham Dah Ould Abeid, Cheikh Ould Abidine, and Aliyine Ould Mbareck Fall are
all members of the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement
(IRA), a group that is not recognized by the government. On January 6, all
three activists were sentenced to a year in prison, almost a month after, on
December 13, they brought to light the case of two young girls forced into
slavery. The men were charged with assaulting police officers and with being
members of unrecognized organizations. The head of the IRA, Abeid, said he was
beaten while in custody and denied medical treatment. A 2007 law made slavery
illegal in Mauritania, but has not been enforced.
