(EPA Photo) President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono flies to India today for a three-day state visit with the promise of $12 billion in bilateral business deals waiting to be signed, pushing India to the forefront as one of Indonesia's biggest foreign investors. The 15 major deals, in the areas of infrastructure, natural resources, manufacturing and services, are due to be signed on Tuesday, with India seeing them as a gateway to access the Southeast Asian market. The deals are among the more than 30 bilateral agreements in an assortment of areas that will be signed during Yudhoyono's visit to India from Monday to Wednesday, his second visit as head of state. Securing the new deals would mark a major addition to fast-growing Indian investment in the country, Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Biren Nanda said in an interview. "We have had investments in textiles, automotive and banking, and now, in this new phase, we are going to have investments in infrastructure, natural resources, manufacturing and services, and the volume of trade will be huge," he said. Nanda added that as one of the dialogue partners of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations, of which Indonesia is a leading member and current chairman, India sees the free trade agreements the regional bloc has with those dialogue partners as "creating unique opportunities" for investors "One of major motivations behind Indian investors wanting to invest in Indonesia is that they seek not only to access the Indonesian market, but also the Asean market," Nanda said, giving the example of Indian motorcycle companies that manufacture in Indonesia but also export their motorcycles to the Philippines. "Many [Indian companies] want to manufacture here because they are also looking at the entire Asean market and because Indonesia is one of the few countries that has done exceptionally well during the economic crisis," he said. Apart from securing a series of bilateral cooperation and business deals on Tuesday, Yudhoyono's visit to India also includes attending India's Republic Day celebrations on Wednesday. The president will be the chief guest during the ceremony to commemorate India's Constitution taking effect on Jan. 26, 1950, after gaining its independence from the United Kingdom in 1947. During Yudhoyono's first state visit in 2005, the two countries signed an agreement on establishing a strategic partnership in various areas including trade and economy. Since then, bilateral trade has increased significantly, from a mere $4 billion in 2005 to nearly $12 billion in 2010, making Indonesia India's second-largest trading partner in Asean. "We hope through this visit we will carry our relations to a new level," Nanda said. The ambassador also said the business deals to be signed will "quantitatively change" Indonesian-Indian trade relations. "So this is something very positive for our relationship because, in the modern world, trade and investment are very strong binding factors between countries," he added.
