"The World Bank has provided us with alternative [scenarios] on what can be done [to seize the assets]," he said Friday, adding that they would hold another meeting to discuss the matter further. Bank Century, now renamed Bank Mutiara, was involved in a Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million) controversial bailout occurring between 2008 and 2009. "The technical team will hold another meeting. The previous meeting was only about studying the ruling on the complete dossiers of Hesham and Rafat," Darmono added. Darmono was referring to two owners of the bank, Saudi national Hesham Al Warraq Thalat and British citizen Rafat Ali Rizfi, who took part of the bailout funds to off-shore accounts in Hong Kong and Switzerland. Hesham and Rafat have been sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison each for bank fraud that led to the disbursement of the bailout funds. The Swiss government, however, viewed the violations of the two men as administrative violations, causing difficulties for the Indonesian government to recover the $155.9 million worth of assets in Switzerland. Darmono added that the World Bank did not possess the authority to pressure the foreign banks, even though it was connected to all banks worldwide. "Thus, the road is still long in Switzerland. But for those [assets] in Hong Kong, there's only one step to go," he said.
