Jayapura declares 'No Rice Day' The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Sat, 02/12/2011 2:44 PM | Archipelago Jayapura declares 'No Rice Day' Jakarta The Jayapura regency administration in Papua has passed a No Rice Day decree that encourages people to abstain from eating rice for one day every month - a move aimed at reducing rice consumption amid rising food prices. Jayapura regent Habel Melkias Suwae said he had issued a special decree to rule on the issue. "This is to support food resilience and at the same time the development of local staples, such as corn, tubers and sago," Habel told tempointeraktif.com on Saturday. The locals, he said, had been told not to consume rice only, because its production was compromised by unfavorable weather conditions. "We also hope that the development of local staples can help improve local farmers' welfare. Hopefully other regencies will follow suit."
