CBS Reporter Sexually Assaulted in Egypt The day President Mubarak stepped down was festive for most Egyptians, but for CBS correspondent Lara Logan, it was a day of horror. CBS announced today that the 39-year-old South African journalist is recovering in the United States after being attacked and sexually assaulted in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Feb. 11. While reporting for 60 Minutes, Logan was surrounded by a 200-strong "frenzied" crowd, reports Reuters. "In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers," CBS said. Equally horrifying was the response that came from some corners of the media: at LA Weekly, writer Simone Wilson took some liberties speculating about how the assault went down (she made sure to note Logan's "shocking good looks"); and Nir Rosen, a journalist who's written for The New Yorker and New York Times, made light of the situation yesterday on Twitter. "Lara Logan had to outdo Anderson [Cooper]," he tweeted. "Yes yes its wrong what happened to her. Of course. I don't support that. But, it would have been funny if it happened to Anderson too." Before retracting the comment and apologizing, Rosen added: "look, she was probably groped like thousands of other women, which is still wrong, but if it was worse than i'm sorry." This morning, Rosen tendered his resignation to NYU's Center on Law and Security, where he had been a fellow. In a statement, executive director Karen Greenberg accepted his departure, noting that she is "deeply distressed by what he wrote about Ms. Logan and strongly denounce his comments."
