Oral sex more dangerous than smoking Oral sex is more likely to cause throat cancer than smoking does. Scientists have warned that human papillomavirus (HPV) spread during oral sex is now the main cause of throat cancer in people under 50, The Daily Mail reports. The HPV virus is to blame for the rise in potentially deadly oral cancers in the last few decades. Prof Maura Gillison of Ohio State University in Columbus said the sexually transmitted virus was a bigger cause of some oral cancers than tobacco. In the United Kingdom, girls aged 12 and 13 are offered the vaccine on the National Health Service to protect against cervical cancer. The disease kills nearly 1,000 women every year in the UK.
