Death and Sickness Clouds Relief for 2,300 Ferried From Jeddah

seriously ill patients were taken to hospital after a ship carrying more than
2,300 migrant workers repatriated from Saudi Arabia docked at the Tanjung Priok
port in North Jakarta on Wednesday.

The National Board for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Overseas
Workers (BNP2TKI) said the sick patients suffered from a range of ailments,
including stroke, heart problems, tuberculosis, tumors, hemorrhages and
measles.

The body of Musrifah, a 50-year-old Indonesian migrant worker who died aboard
the ship on Saturday, was taken to Kramat Jati Police Hospital before being
flown to her home town in West Kalimantan.

A total of 2,349 workers were repatriated by the government aboard the Labobar
ship from Jeddah on April 22.

With the death of Musrifah and the birth of four babies aboard the vessel, the
total number of passengers who arrived alive in Indonesia reached 2,352.

The government had originally arranged flights back to Indonesia for the
migrant workers and had previously flown back more than 2,000 Indonesian
workers after a rash of reports exposed abuse by their Saudi employers.

Government officials said they had opted to charter a ship because it was "the
most efficient way" to repatriate the workers.

"With the ship, we can pick them all up at once, and we can [process their
immigration documents] on the ship," Roostiawati, head of foreign cooperation
at the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration, said in April.

"That way they can go directly to their home town once they arrive in Jakarta."

Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar said the BNP2TKI had
been tasked with transporting the workers home.

Out of work and with no means to return to their homeland, thousands of the
workers had been living under the Kandara Bridge in Jeddah.

The government has temporarily halted sending workers to Saudi Arabia following
the accusations of abuse as well as reports of illegal workers.

BNP2TKI chief Jumhur Hidayat said the government aimed to complete a memorandum
of understanding with Saudi Arabia on establishing workers' protection by the
end of May. "We need to make sure that we do not have recurring cases [of
abuse]," he said.

There are about 1.5 million Indonesians working in Saudi Arabia, the top
country that employes Indonesian workers, most of whom are unskilled.

"This case should serve as a lesson for us to fix the workers' placement
system," he said.
