Istilah demokrasi memang sudah ada di zaman Yunani, tapi istilah Human Rights atau Droits de l'homme belakangan.
Benernya sebelum revolusi Perancis istilah yang dipakai di dunia anglo-saxon adalah Rights (Bill of Rights di Inggeris tahun 1689 dan Bill of Rights Amerika 1791). Magna Carta (1215) juga cuma pakai istilah Rights.
