Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono fumes at online corruption slurs Peter Alford, Jakarta correspondent From: The Australian May 31, 2011 12:00AM PRESIDENT Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has lashed out at online media spreading "outrageous slander", as the party he founded looks increasingly threatened by an array of scandals. "Two days ago there was someone who slandered me from a dark place with a dark heart," he told reporters yesterday morning after summoning them to Jakarta's Halim Air Force Base before he flew out to Kalimantan. "This was outrageous slander, including personal insults. I say openly they are irresponsible, ignoble and cowardly." The President's outburst came as his Democrat Party supporters scrambled to bring home from Singapore its sacked treasurer, corruption suspect Muhammad Nazaruddin. One of Dr Yudhoyono's greatest political assets is an image untainted by corruption, supported by the Democrats' relatively clean and youthful aura. But the party he established in 2003 is taking heavy damage from the exposure of dangerous allegations against Mr Nazaruddin, 33, and the implication of other notables in separate matters. Mr Nazaruddin apparently flew to Singapore the same day he was sacked as party treasurer, May 23, and the day before the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) obtained an order forbidding him to go abroad. Mr Nazarrudin is accused by Constitutional Court chairman Mahfud of trying to bribe the court's secretary-general with $S120,000 ($90,574). Professor Mahfud reported the bribery attempt to the President in November, but it was only publicly disclosed earlier this month. The Constitutional Court chief made matters even hotter for the government party on Sunday when he accused a member of the Democrats central council, Andi Nurpati, of forging a document submitted to the court during an electoral dispute. At the time, August 2009, Ms Nurpati was an executive member of the General Elections Commission. She resigned that post mid last year after deciding to join the Democrat council, provoking allegations she had favoured the party in her commission role. Professor Mahfud told the Jakarta Post he had given the National Police detailed evidence of Ms Nurpati's activity and was disappointed the case had since made no progress. Separately again, Youth and Sport Minister Andi Mallarangeng has been summonsed by KPK as a witness in the probe of his ministerial secretary, accused of taking bribes from the construction of an athletes dormitory for the November Southeast Asian Games. Accusations arising from KPK and the Constitutional Court are risky for the government because those post-Reformasi institutions are still widely considered to remain uncorrupted. But Dr Yudhoyono seemed to be most vexed yesterday by a personal slur in a BlackBerry message on Saturday, purportedly from the missing Mr Nazaruddin, that fanned out rapidly online. The message from a Singapore number named the President, Mr Mallarangeng (his former spokesman and his beaten candidate for the Democrat Party chairman's job last year), current party chairman Anas Urbaningrum, presidential adviser Daniel Sparingga and Ms Nurpati. "SMS, Twitter, websites, Blackberrys - all online media should be used to improve life and educate," Dr Yudhoyono said. "We should not use online media to spread lies and assassinate character or abuse anyone, not just me, but those who have become victims of information technology." Mr Nazaruddin, who remains a Democrat member of the House of Representatives, denounced the message as lies and a forgery. >From an undisclosed location, he said he was in Singapore for medical >treatment and would return once that was complete. Mr Nazaruddin did not break any law by departing before the KPK order was issued. But his presence in Singapore, which has no extradition treaty with Jakarta and is a favoured bolthole for wealthy Indonesian fugitives, is an embarrassment for the government and his party.
