"The equipment we installed this morning was stolen by irresponsible people," Andi Arief, a member of the presidentially appointed natural disaster taskforce, told news portal Detik.com. In order to continue monitoring the area, where one of the volcano's six craters has recently begun spewing poisonous levels of carbon dioxide, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) will immediately retrieve three more earthquake detectors from Bandung to replace the missing ones, Andi said. Mount Dieng is an active volcano with six craters: Condradimuko, Siglagah, Sikidang, Sileri, Sinila and Timbang. All six craters have the potential to erupt and release poisonous gas, but PVMBG chief Surono reported on Thursday that the only dangerous area at present is the Timbang crater. Since Sunday, the government has relocated more than 1,100 people living in the area to shelters in nearby the Batur subdistrict.
