Indonesia's ‘Electric Current Therapy’ Spreads to Malaysia Straits Times Indonesia | August 23, 2011 A uniquely Indonesian alternative form of healing, electric current therapy, where the sick endanger their lives by lying across railway tracks has been copied in Malaysia. (JG Photo) Kuala Lumpur. A uniquely Indonesian alternative form of healing, electric current therapy, where the sick endanger their lives by lying across railway tracks has been copied in Malaysia. A spokesman for Malaysia’s national railway company, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad, said people, mainly foreigners, particularly Bangladeshis, were lying on railway tracks in the hope the electrical energy from the tracks would cure them of their illnesses. ‘We are not sure if this works, but it is clear to us that this is a dangerous act,’ he told the New Straits Times. The origins of such ‘cures’ can be traced to the village of Rawa Buaya, near Jakarta. Dozens turn up in the Javanese village every day, enticed by a rumor about a man paralysed by a stroke who went to the tracks to kill himself, but found he was cured. They say the mild current that passes through their bodies when they lie across the tracks makes pain go away and eases the symptoms of conditions ranging from diabetes to arthritis. The authorities there have threatened penalties of up to three months in prison or heavy fines — to no avail, a Reuters report said earlier this month. In Malaysia, the KTMB has increased checks to prevent people using the tracks for “healing” purposes, the New Straits Times said. Reprinted courtesy of Straits Times Indonesia.
