Baghdad mosque assault dead buried

RELATIVES and friends last night began burying the dozens of people, including
an MP, killed in a suicide attack inside the capital's largest Sunni mosque.

The blast, blamed on al-Qa'ida, was part of violence that left 35 dead across
the country yesterday, just days before the conclusion of the holy Muslim
fasting month of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr festival.

The casualties from the attack at the Um al-Qura mosque late on Sunday ranged
from 28 to 32 with up to 37 wounded. Among the dead were Khaled al-Fahdawi, an
MP from western Anbar province allied with the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, the
Interior Ministry said. Elderly men and children were also among the casualties.

Pointing the finger at the terrorist group were Baghdad security spokesman
Qassim Atta and Ahmed Abdulghafur al-Samarrai, the head of Um al-Qura and one
of the founders of an anti-al-Qa'ida militia force of Sunni tribesmen in
Baghdad.

"It is 100 per cent certain that al-Qa'ida is behind this attack," he said,
adding that the bomber "blew himself up in the middle of the people in the
mosque to try to get maximum casualties".
Mr al-Samarrai said the suicide bomber had walked up to a crowd as the mosque
chief was giving a speech and detonated his explosives.
