TRIPOLI, September 7.—Cut off from the outside world, with no electricity, water or gas, the inhabitants of Bani Walid have been enduring a dramatic situation for more than a week, after subversive forces took up position at entrances to the city and fruitlessly demanded that the forces loyal to Muammar al Gaddafi should hand over their weapons. The siege of the city came as a result of a supposition on the part of the subversive forces that the Libyan leader is in the area with other government officials, EFE reports. Meanwhile, NATO forces have intensified their attacks on Sirte (in the north), Gaddafi’s birthplace and one of the principal points of resistance to the self-appointed National Transition Council (NTC). The bombings hit 20 military targets in that city, according to the imperialist alliance. NATO has additionally bombed Sebha (in the west), where a ground-to-air missile installation was destroyed, Telesur reports. NATO aircraft hit tree radars and three antiaircraft batteries in Hun (in the central region of Fezzan, between Sabha and Sirte) and another eight in Waddan (northeast of Fezzan). The African Union demanded this Wednesday that the NTC end its violence against the country’s African population, members of which are being pursued for allegedly being mercenaries under Gaddafi’s orders. Jean Ping, president of the African Union Commission, asked from Paris if it was normal that, in a country with a one-third black population, Africans should be confused with mercenaries, ANSA noted. The last few days have seen growing condemnation of the persecution of Sub-Saharan Africans by armed opposition groups.
