+++ by Karl Rusnak on October 15, 2011 - 2:33pm Republican presidential Candidate Rick Perry laid out his proposal for energy and job production Friday. Although Perry's alleged focus is on removing our dependence on foreign oil, his proposal is largely focused on domestic oil drilling and continuing the misguided right wing assault on regulations. Perry claims his plan will create 1.2 million new jobs. He claims he will accomplish this by opening up vast swaths of land to drilling and exploration, including the hotly debated Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. His plan revolves around the idea that the U.S. is just not exploiting its given resources well enough, despite the fact that we will never be able to drill our way out of dependence on foreign oil. Perry also wants to slash environmental regulations, claiming they are stifling energy production and jobs. This oversimplified plan trumpets the idea that we already have everything we need, the government just needs to get out of the way. This kind of thinking is unimaginative, unproven and regressive in its nature and will not solve the nation's energy or job problems. If Perry wanted to get serious about job creation and energy simultaneously, he would be focusing on developing green energy and protecting it by fixing our trade policy. America has the necessary tools to develop a vibrant green energy industry, but our unfair trading situation is holding it back. And unlike Perry's solution where we tap into our fossil fuel resources and damage the environment in the process, our energy situation would improve with time if we invested in green energy. Under Perry's plan we would just deplete our resources and wind up in the same boat we're in now. Experience has shown that reducing regulations can lead to negative effects. Reducing regulation in the financial industry led to disaster, and the dismantling of the EPA that Perry is proposing could lead to similar disaster in the areas of health and environment. Regulations have been put in place for a reason, and the health of Americans has improved as a result of them. While it may lower the cost to some producers, eliminating regulations produces externalities that can increase the cost to the nation as a whole. This is a disappointing starting point on economic policy for the Perry campaign. We need new, innovative ideas for creating jobs and reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and Perry has given us a tired and dangerous plan instead. ------------------------------------ Post message: [email protected] Subscribe : [email protected] Unsubscribe : [email protected] List owner : [email protected] Homepage : http://proletar.8m.com/Yahoo!
