by Dustin Ensinger on October 28, 2011 - 12:37pm One of U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk's top deputies recently criticized China for using a whole host of tactics that tilt the playing field in their favor when it comes to international trade, according to Reuters. Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis told a congressional panel that China's protectionism is preventing it from living up to its obligations under the World Trade Organization. "Many of these troubling policies reflect China's strengthening of state control over its economy and a retreat from its initial strong push to liberalize markets in the first years after its World Trade Organization accession," he said, according to Reuters. One of the most effective ways that China games the system is by purposely undervaluing its currency. That makes China's goods cheaper on the world stage and allows them to sell more than their competitors. By some estimates, China's currency is undervalued by as much as 40 percent. However, the Obama administration has failed to act. Instead, they prefer to work with China behind the scenes. "Our approach is founded on proven, vigorous enforcement and results-oriented dialogue," Marantis said, according to Reuters. China gains an upper hand on the competition by handing out illegal subsidies to select companies and industries, dumping products in foreign markets and driving down the costs, forcing technology transfer and a whole host of other tactics. Those tools have allowed China to pass the U.S. in numerous categories and amass massive trade surpluseswith the U.S. along the way. "We know that we have a steep and difficult road ahead. For all of this, we have a plan that is comprehensive, strategic and flexible," Marantis said. ------------------------------------ Post message: [email protected] Subscribe : [email protected] Unsubscribe : [email protected] List owner : [email protected] Homepage : http://proletar.8m.com/Yahoo!
