++++ by Karl Rusnak on October 29, 2011 - 2:42pm World Trade Organization rulings are not beneficial for the United States. For instance, in the late 1990s the United States had safeguards against the import of wheat gluten from many countries. As a result, the European Communities filed a complaint with the WTO, claiming that the United States' safeguards were reducing the market share of European Communities' exporters by 40 percent. The World Trade Organization body ruled in favor of the European Communities, and allowed retaliatory tariffs to be used against the United States. As a result of this ruling, the United States allowed the safeguards to expire in 2001. This action hurt domestic suppliers of wheat gluten. The membership of the United States in the World Trade Organization (WTO) has made it nearly impossible for the U.S. to instate trade policies that are in the best interest of the country. In fact, the United States loses 9 out of every 10 cases that are brought against it in the WTO. Economy in Crisis has prepared a new report that documents all of the cases that the United States has lost in the World Trade Organization. Entitled “Summary and Analysis of World Trade Organization Cases Lost By The United States,” the report reads as a history of economic setbacks. It appears that nearly every action the United States takes to protect its domestic industries is ruled to be illegal by the WTO. A look at all the cases the United States has lost is further evidence that we need to rid ourselves of our obligation to this supranational body. We should be able to take whatever course of action we feel is necessary on trade without fear of repercussions from any international organization. Our membership in the WTO has only served to increase our trade deficit, and to expedite the offshoring of American jobs. We need to rethink this membership if we want our nation to be economically prosperous. ------------------------------------ Post message: [email protected] Subscribe : [email protected] Unsubscribe : [email protected] List owner : [email protected] Homepage : http://proletar.8m.com/Yahoo!
