Panel-panel sel-sel surya sudah menjamur dan di belakang rumah saya juga sudah memasang beberapa untuk percobaan. Beberapa panel menggunakan sel-sel buatan Suntech. Panel-panel ini saya hubungkan dengan 'grid tied inverters' agar bisa disambungkan langsung dengan jala-jala listrik rumah. Inverternya memang yang murah meriah hasil dapat beli lewat eBay yang semuanya buatan RRC. Pada awalnya semuanya bekerja dengan baik, tapi dalam waktu beberapa bulan saja ketiga inverter tersebut sudah jebol semuanya. Jadi dalam hal ini RRC belum punya standar bagi produk-produk tertentu yang dihasilkan. Dulu ada insentif dari Pemerintah Australia untuk pemasangan sistem pembangkit listrik tenaga matahari di mana bisa dikatakan semua panel-panelnya buatan RRC. Teman saya di Perth hanya keluar dana A$ 150 dari kantong sendiri untuk pemasangan sistem berkapasitas 1kW di atas atap rumahnya. Bagi kolega-kolega saya yang memasang sistem serupa saya selalu menyarankan untuk menggunakan inverter buatan Jerman yang mungkin adalah terbaik di dunia. Penggunaan turbin sangat terbatas karena tergantung pada wilayah yang cocok dan harus di pedalaman. Tidak mungkin memasang turbin di perkotaan karena sistem ini menghasilkan polusi suara. Teman saya yang asal Bandung, begitu dapat gelar PhD langsung bekerja di Cray Research Inc. (almarhum). Tidak berapa lama, berhubung mereka sama-sama satu almamater, Steve Chen menarik dia untuk bergabung dengan Supercomputer Systems Incorporated (almarhum). Teman saya pernah cerita bahwa Eau Claire adalah kota yang sangat kecil di mana jarang ada orang asal Asia. Sewaktu berada di sebuah supermarket di sana, dia dipelototi anak kecil bule dari kaki sampai kepala. Rupanya sekarang Steve Chen sudah mendirikan Galactic Computing yang berkantor di Shenzhen. Sementara teman saya masih asyik merancang 'chips' dan masih tinggal di Lembah Silikon. Saya terakhir ketemu dia di sana tahun 2002. Jadi dalam hal ini pesatnya perkembangan teknologi RRC sangat dibantu oleh datangnya pakar-pakar dunia yang kebanyakan kalau tidak semuanya berdarah Cina, walaupun mungkin banyak dari mereka yang bukan kelahiran RRC. Kualitas orang-orang RRC saya akui cukup bagus. Saya pernah uji kemampuan orang R&D Huawei di mana saya minta pertanyaan spesifik saya diterjemahkan dan ditanyakan pada salah satu dari mereka lewat telpon. Dari jawabannya, saya bisa menyimpulkan dia sangat mengusai bidangnya dan usia dia masih sangat muda.
